He is a volunteer firefighter and wanted a replica of his helmet for his cake. I did not do this one alone. I got to work with my mom!! In fact, my mom did a lot of the work. I helped decorate, but she made the cake, the icing, the rice krispie treats, and fondant. She shaped the hat, and did most of the flag on the back. She usually doesn't work with fondant so we used this time for me to show her some of what I have learned the past few years. We had a blast. I also got to show off my cake cricket by creating the medallion on the front. That machine is awesome. It saved me so much time. Congratulations Devan and Mollie. I had a lot of fun figuring out how to make this. I will admit that the monkey took two tries. The first time I made the head and the body out of cake. Well, it fell apart on me and I had to try something else. I decided to make the head out of Styrofoam so it would be lighter. It worked. I also didn't trim as much cake from the body so it held together better than the first attempt. The monkey arms, legs, and tail are made out of fondant as well as the bird and the half eaten banana. <div>I was terrified to travel with this cake. I had so many dowel rods going through each layer and many going through all the layers. I was nervous the whole morning until I got the call that the cake made it just fine. It had to travel two hours!!! A high five to the dad that picked it up and was so super careful in making sure it got home to his wife and sweet birthday girl!!</div><div>I did not come up with this design. It of course looks wonderful and the <a href="http://www.elumdesigns.com/blog/2008/10/07/funky-monkey-cake/">original designers</a> are amazing! One day, I know I will be able to be that good!! Having free reign to create, I went online and found pictures of the sweet little classroom pets. I decided that I would create pictures of each Wonder Pet, their vehicle (a flying boat) and their symbol. I left four cupcakes with just plain icing for anyone that didn't like fondant. I had so much with this one. I actually drew this poodle by hand - no overhead projector! I thought about putting a border around the cake, but was too nervous to mess it up. The plaque on the front of the cake did have "Happy Birthday" on it, but I didn't write it on there until I got to the party. Each year they dress up as characters from the book and have a party. I have had the privilege of making this cake for the past two years and have been asked to make it for a third time. I try to keep them a little similar, but make them look a little different each year. I am sad that I wasn't able to put any candy rats on the cake and hope that the students have some candy gummy worms to add to it a little. This year, I wanted to make it look like it was really going to fall over. I put a little green food coloring in the cake batter to make it look old and moldy and also made the icing in between each layer green! So much fun!!! You can't mess up this cake. I will post my first one tomorrow when I can get to my laptop. It was made for a cute little boy that goes to my church. The cake is white cake with buttercream icing and covered in marshmallow fondant. I learned how to make this from a blog called <a href="http://kitchenscrapbook.com/2009/07/23/lightning-mcqueen-birthday-cake/">Kitchen Scrapbook</a>. Slice into the cake to see what the doctor did say." It was a blast. Especially because she wore a pink shirt in and told everyone it was a girl - just to throw them all off. Then she cut into the cake and showed everyone the slice. Everyone got so excited and had a blast.<br />I wanted to make it look a little better than this, but I didn't even have an hour to pull it all together. I made the cake and the buttercream the night before. She called me after school and told me what the doctor said.
